It is a modernized successor to radio R-105 DM. The options for operation at different frequencies have the designation R-108M - from 28.5 to 36.5 MHz; R-109m - 21.5 to 28.5 MHz.
Despite the similar name is a completely different design, a much lighter (housing with Bakelite), built on subminiature lamps and semiconductors. R-105M was intended for ground forces.
